Chapter Twelve

Although Granger rode home with me, he immediately left the car and raced into the woods behind the cottage. I didn’t take it personally. A wolf needed to do what a wolf needed to do.

I cobbled together a dinner of macaroni and cheese for Marley and was able to present her with the gingerbread cookies for dessert before Raoul made an appearance.

Marley’s blue eyes widened as she chewed. “Did you make these? They’re amazing.”

“Sadly, I can’t take credit.” Although I was sorely tempted.

“We should bake more,” Marley said. “I think we’d both enjoy it.”

“I enjoy the eating. You can enjoy the baking.”

“Maybe this weekend, if I don’t have too much homework,” she mused.

Her comment reminded me of my conversation with Evan and his remark about filling the well of my soul.

“You should bake anyway,” I said. “You know you’ll get your homework done. Ferris Bueller once said to slow down and enjoy life or you’ll miss—or something to that effect.”

Marley arched an eyebrow. “Okay,” she said slowly. “Is this what the start of a midlife crisis looks like? Quoting ‘80s movies?”

“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.” I exited the kitchen and walked to the closet. Inside, nestled in the corner, was my broomstick. As much as I loved to ride, I’d put the broomstick away because it had been a gift from Alec. It had been hard for me to enjoy something when the memories attached to it were so painful. Being with Granger was amazing, but it didn’t erase my experience with Alec.

I seized the broomstick. It was time to move past the pain. I didn’t want to cease an activity because of someone else. If I did, that meant Alec still had power over me. If I couldn’t deal with the memories, then I could always sell the broomstick and buy myself a new one. But I shouldn’t give up flying, not when it brought me joy.

I hefted the broomstick in my hand. There was no way I could afford one as nice as this. Alec had given it to me as a token of his love, so I tried to focus on those positive associations.

PP3 raised his head and gave me an appraising look as I walked past the sofa.

“I’m going out for a ride,” I told the dog. “I won’t be long.”

Marley observed me from the kitchen doorway. “Do you want company?”

“No, thanks. This is me time.”

“Phew, I was hoping you’d say that.”

I smiled. “Still afraid of heights?”

“Not as much as before, but I still don’t think flying will become a favorite pastime.”

“Fair enough. You can bake, and I’ll fly. See? We’re not the same.”

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be like you,” she insisted.

I left the cottage and stood outside, breathing in the cool night air. I took a moment to admire the starry sky. They didn’t name this place Starry Hollow for nothing. Even if there’d been no moon, there were enough stars to light up the entire canvas above our heads. It seemed as though I could see every constellation in existence, which, of course, was impossible.
